AF Blakemore
Client Overview
Timewise and AF Blakemore have collaborated for more than 20 years.
AF Blakemore is one of the largest distribution partners for Spar in the UK. It manages the
supply chain and logistics for Spar stores, garage forecourts and local shops. Their coverage
spans from Birmingham to the south and west of Britain, including Wales.
The company ensures Spar’s products are delivered efficiently to its network of locations. AF
Blakemore operates across multiple sites and is a key player in the UK grocery sector. With
approximately 7,500 employees across retail stores and logistics divisions, and six distribution
centres (DCs) including a major site in Willenhall, AF Blakemore relies on seamless operations.
For more than two decades, it’s depended on Timewise to maintain smooth warehouse and
distribution operations.
Challenge
Prior to partnering with Timewise, AF Blakemore faced several operational challenges across their multiple warehouse locations. Each site used different equipment from various suppliers, with no standardisation nor interoperability between them.
The fragmented infrastructure led to inefficiencies in sharing resources and providing consistent technical support. Operational flexibility was also sacrificed with the lack of uniformity as equipment and processes couldn’t easily be transferred between sites. Additionally, device management was reactive, with a break-fix approach that often resulted in delays due to inconsistent spare kit availability across locations.
Solution
Timewise’s chief goal when beginning to work with AF Blakemore was to create a standardised operating model for both their distribution centres and their warehouse.
This included:
- Uniform Equipment Setup: The Timewise team audited the equipment used across the AF Blakemore network. They introduced uniform solutions for each environment, including freezer, chill, and ambient warehouses. This process immediately enabled seamless resource sharing and greater operational efficiency.
- Implementing a Multi-Temperature System: The distribution centres operate in multiple temperature zones, including frozen, chilled, and ambient environments. Timewise collaborated with AF Blakemore to select the right equipment for each zone. This ensured smooth handling of temperature-sensitive goods.
- Switching to Android-Based Systems: AF Blakemore upgraded from legacy Windows-based devices to modern Android technology. Timewise managed the transition smoothly, ensuring minimal disruption to business operations. This shift supported both warehouse and in-store environments, enhancing device performance and integration.
- Comprehensive Support Services: Timewise implemented a robust support contract with a five-day turnaround for broken or malfunctioning devices. They also provide technical support for key projects, such as recent system upgrades and new site rollouts, ensuring that operations continue without interruption.
- Strategic Technology Consulting: Beyond device provision, Timewise acts as a strategic partner, understanding AF Blakemore’s evolving needs. They supported the design and technology implementation of a purpose-built depot in Bedford, launched in 2021, and provided in-cab technology solutions to enhance delivery operations.
Results
The partnership between Timewise and AF Blakemore has delivered significant improvements across their distribution network:
- Enhanced Operational Efficiency: Standardising devices and consolidating processes improved efficiency throughout the supply chain. This was critical for managing fresh produce, where timing is essential.
- Cost Reduction: Streamlining equipment and processes reduced operational costs while improving device reliability and support structures.
- Seamless Technology Transitions: The migration from Windows to Android was executed flawlessly, thanks to meticulous planning. This allowed AF Blakemore to adopt cutting-edge technology without disrupting daily operations.
- Improved Device Management: The introduction of mobile devices for warehouse staff, replacing fixed forklift terminals, increased flexibility. Drivers now use PDAs with in-cab technology to streamline deliveries and enhance real-time data capture.
- Strategic Growth Support: Timewise’s involvement in projects like the new Bedford depot and the rollout of EPOS solutions to over 220 company-owned SPAR stores demonstrates their ability to support AF Blakemore’s growth and diversification strategies.
Conclusion
Timewise’s long-standing partnership with AF Blakemore has greatly improved their warehouse and distribution operations.
By standardising equipment, enhancing support services, and adopting modern technology, Timewise has boosted efficiency, reduced costs, and supported AF Blakemore’s strategic growth initiatives.
The duration of the partnership, spanning over two decades, reflects Timewise’s dedication to providing tailored solutions that deliver long-term value for their clients.
